Once a reliable festival favorite, the food booth in Mexico has been a bit more hit-and-miss lately and Food & Wine unfortunately continues that trend. It's still worth a stop for the delicious flauta, but you'll probably want to grab dessert somewhere else.
👍 Flauta de Barbacoa ($8.00)
The barbacoa was juicy, bold and flavorful and our clearly came straight from the fryer. The tortilla was hot, fresh and crunchy. The salsa verde was bright and mildly spiced and the queso fresco and crema Mexicana added an extra punch of salty creaminess. This is the best of the booth and worth making a stop for.
😐 Tostada de Camarones ($7.75)
The biggest flavor here is the chipotle aïoli, though we wish there was more mango to add some sweetness to balance it. As it is, the mango gets lost. Also, the fried shrimp tasted like it had been frozen. With so much wonderfully fresh shrimp at this festival, this dish is just so-so
👎 Pan de Elote ($6.00)
The corn cake by itself is fine – nothing to write home about, but it’s decent. Unfortunately, the chocolate sauce ruins it. If they had used a good quality Mexican-style chocolate that was infused with cinnamon, it may have been passable, but this tastes like straight-up Hershey’s syrup. We did like the addition of the Tajin seasoning, but the queso fresco got a bit lost in the cheap chocolate flavor.
